We may be reaping the consequences of not having certain must-have foundations blocks in our lives. Hence the powerlessness and ineffectiveness of our brand of Christianity. Hence the seeming advance of atheism and humanism in our modern societies.
Jesus Christ and the first apostles laid down the foundations of the Christian Church through the power of the Holy Spirit and we will do well to heed their advice and return to their solid teachings so that our lives can be as powerful as theirs were.
I have had people come to me for counselling about many issues concerning their lives. Sometimes they do not have a clue what was going on or why things were going wrong in their lives. Others were convinced demons were at work, out to destroy their lives.
Although I believe in demonic activity (because it is absolutely biblical!) I often first look at something else: do these people have biblical foundations laid down at the core of their lives?
If you have these core foundations in your lives, you will be able to withstand whatever life or the devil throws at you:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24-25
Let me suggest a few of these core foundations that we must have in our lives to make sure we are building our lives on the rock and not on shifting sand.
1. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus” – 1 Timothy 2:5
A lady asked me for help one day because her child had a lot of nightmares and often did not sleep well at night. She was at her wits end and asked if I could pray the devil out her house. After chatting with her I came to understand that although she believes in Jesus, she still had several images of Mary and other saints in her house to which she regularly prayed. The bible calls that plain idolatry and it actually displeases the Lord greatly when we are praying to the dead (See Deuteronomy 18:9-13.) There was no point me praying for the child unless the mother be prepared to cleanse the house from idolatry. It would be like trying to empty the ocean with a leaking bucket! First, she would have to renounce her idolatry and accept that Jesus alone is her Saviour. Unfortunately, in this case she was not prepared to do it. She was more concerned to belong to her ‘mother church’ (Catholic church) than to belong to the true Saviour, Jesus Christ.
2. The Word of God
Jesus said that we must build our lives on His teachings if we want to be found standing on a rock. We need to meditate on His Word daily and let those words sink into our spirits. We need to act upon them and change our lives accordingly.
Keep [God’s Word] always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. – Joshua 1:8
Obey God’s Word and teach your children to do that too from the moment they can understand language! Sadly, many Christians do not know even the basics of the teachings in the bible. Hence the many problems in their lives, depression, stress, sicknesses, relationship problems. Hence the fruitlessness of their Christian lives. Let’s turn to the Word of God and be obedient, so that He can visit us with power and revive us!
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42
Immediately after Pentecost and the birth of the Christian church, the new Christians clung together, devoting themselves (giving their all) to the apostles’ teachings (the teachings of Jesus, revived by the Holy Spirit.) They clung to fellowship (relationships with other Christians) sharing meals with each others, AND TO PRAYER. Christians are safest together because they can look after each other: praying for and protecting one another. A lone Christian can easily become a target for the enemy. So, find a group of Christians who share the belief that Jesus is Lord and that the Bible is the Word of God. Start fellowshipping with them and build each other up. You will find you will grow stronger and quicker than being on your own.
4. Be filled with the Holy Spirit!
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. – Acts 1:8
Just by reading the book of Acts you will become aware that to be an effective Christian you will need the power of the Holy Spirit.
On hearing this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. – Acts 19:5,6
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit – Ephesians 5:18
Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit so you can have power to tell the world that Jesus alone is Lord.
If we put these basic foundations in our lives as the Word of God teaches, you will find that many of your problems will start slipping away, because as Jesus teaches, you have become wise and have built on the Rock!
Finally, as for the devil attacking you, take James’ advice from his book, chapter 4:7
Submit yourselves, then, to God [put those foundations in your lives!! and then:] Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
